Parenting in the modern world | Kyle Seaman | TEDxMontreal
Entrepreneur Kyle Seaman spent more than a year trying to reverse engineer parenting and shares his fascinating conclusions.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Your loss.if you want to write him off. Sounded like a bunch of good ideas to me.
Personally I don’t judge ideas on the so-called "credibility" of the person delivering them. I make my mind up whether they sound like good ideas.
But people like you just love to knock stuff.
Well it’s your loss.
Very true . I find that a lot family in modern society always try to disencourage people to do what they love and are passionate about and instead try to lock them into a mindset or as I would say put them on a leash to drag them to whatever job or hobby they find fitting .
Absolutely love this talk! You can see his passion on this topic and I completely agree with his words. I love that he has this data! He is taking a stand for children and parents in a healthy genuine way.
Plus…… does this fragile guy have kids?

It’s great how you can dismiss someone like that with real hard facts that are clearly not prejudiced!!! This guy made a free app to try to change the relationship between parents and children by empowering children in things they don’t usually feel they have control over. Whether he is right or not, he is trying to do something great, at least have respect for that.
Amazing speech. A little nervous around the edges but he had such brilliant stuff to share!
you have no idea how to raise kids.. you need to learn so much more and you have no right being on this show and using the world hate is wrong… so wrong… you fail the worst i could do… i haver raised 33 suicidal children… so bad.
You’re one of these "I know best" people.
Sarah, there’s always someone who has to spoil a good talk with your stupid negative comments. Try and be more open to ideas rather than writing them off instantly.
But hey, your loss.
I’d rather take advice from him than from you. You sound *terrible*.
Sometimes it’s good to hear that I am not alone–that other parents, like myself, don’t look forward to dinner time and bed time.
Well then he remembers what it’s like to be one.
People like you are obviously SOOOO mature and grown up and sensible and fucking SERIOUS that you forget how to enjoy life.
Well done for being such a mature adult Sarah. You sound a like a really unhappy person and you probably take it out on your kids. I feel sorry for them.
If parents aren’t having fun with their kids, they’re missing out big time. Put an accountability chart on the wall so that even parents can have consequences. Mom yells, she has to make the kids’ bed for a week … You get the idea. Happy kids, happy parents, happy family 🙂
Huh… this is like a product pitch.
Do it big Kyle!
Great talk by Kyle! I’m a young dad who’s recently started a youtube channel geared at helping dads with young kids. I’m part of the 1% creators trying to get the conversation going with the 90%. If you know of any dads who want to be better dads everyday, please send them our way. Thanks!
I think it is obviously wrong to say people are parents( as is said) Single moms aint parenting, unless they are on welfare. Dads aint parenting( if theyre doing traditional provider, mommy model roles) The dads just go back and forth between, ill kick your ass- and good job, or alt , go ask your mother. So the male becomes the enforcer and the female becomes the live in nurse. Single dads aint parenting, because they usually do the, so basicly the family aint functional(truth),..so what, make the best if it, and dont get caught..Parents are parents because society says they are, not because they are, but then again, having all the basic needs covered, is much better then, go eat out of a trash barrel, lets go to the soup kitchen downstairs, cos we live in the shelter upstairs, or Tiny Tim as soon as he leaves , sqeeze between his screen door, bump the lock, threw all his food out the back window, get out, and meet me back at the abandon building by the fire plug. Or your10…time to kill an enemy prisoner or some stuff. To a lot of kids tho, you aint parents
I hare Ted talks its a circus.
inspiring

This is a great little video that gives parents a way to measure what normal behavior is -and provides new tools to help motivate your kids.
Parenting industry!?!?!?!? Seriously??!!!
Poor guy, stage fright is giving him a heart attack. He can barely breathe properly.
uh huh. reverse engineer. Well, the sing song cheerleader voice in mothers now, puts the child into trance. Then the mother is programming the child. But then teaching requires love. And as the leader in world wide memes did say: "there is no love here" Well, no there is not.
Gun Safety and Sex Education are too neglected by parents. These kids are being raised by internet, tv, and school because mommy and daddy are too occupied by bills, news, and soap operas to talk to their kids about important topics and spend time with them in general. Another key reason kids aren’t being taught by their parents is because they themselves don’t have guns or condoms. Most mothers don’t understand sex because if they did, they would’ve waited to get pregnant.
10:54 – You are still a kid LOL
it’s not fair
Puke…… I’m so glad I’ll be dead when this generation takes power………
inspiring! why games are so attractive or even addictive? fairly achievable challenges and rewards and ranking and everyone gets something wherever you rank!
If you argue with your family and they tell you: don’t talk to me like that or your gonna loose allot, simply ask them what do you have to offer $5 billion? ?
Who on earth will take parenting advise from 25yr old nerd who has never parented a day in his life!!! People like that can only use data/stats and not real life experiences, he has zero credibility.
Looks like you are on to something here Kyle. There is an idea that all parents only have problems with their kids and everyone else does not, is just not true. The parents should choose to unite so they can heal and all feel empowered. We have been reverse engineering this parenting concept for the past 20 years. The first approach was in 1994, the observation was that kids would ask parents to do or have something and the parent would almost right away say no, not right now, we don’t have time for that, we can’t afford it now, etc. The child would always feel not empowered on some level when they shared what was important to them at any age (2-18yr). This observational approach will never produce long-term happy relationships. The question now is "How do you create the opposite or a long-term happy relationships?" Is there a way to stop saying NO to children and always say YES without just giving them everything? 1994 marked the starting point of the journey to finding this answer which later was called " CREATING CHAMPIONS FOR LIFE". We would like to be of any service to your mission. The idea of like minded driven people coming together for the better of man kind to HEAL – UNITE – EMPOWER is a very worth while cause.
I wish I wasn’t so sensitive to smacking lip sounds. Sigh….
The species is growing, no problem there, why do sapiens think pumping out children is an achievement, one could date a single mom and have the same experience or adopt.
Haha the nerd part is unnecessary. Being a nerd has nothing to do with anything.
This is probably the best definition of ‘being normal’. It’s not being about ordinary or average, it is about knowing that you are not alone.
need a little guidance about the great debate between parents and children? This is helping us to make the perfect choice for us, and first of all, our children. Hope you will find this helpful
