Knowing the Baumrind’s General Parenting Styles
One of the most popular parenting styles is Baumrind’s general parenting styles. According to her study, parenting is a combination of acceptance and responsiveness.
• Authoritative parenting
In this case the parents are both responsive and demanding. This is also known as balanced parenting wherein the parents are very much focused about the child’s maturity. Parents who are practicing authoritative parenting can easily comprehend their child’s thoughts and feelings and help them solve their problems.
They usually assign a clear set of standards and supervise their kids if all of those standards and limits are being followed. At the same time, they allow their kids to build independence. Punishments that are not violent are firm and make sure to explain the reasons and rationale behind those punishments.
• Authoritarian parenting
In authoritarian parenting, the parent is demanding yet unresponsive. This is commonly known as strict parenting wherein the parent sets a high expectation of obedience to the orders and directions. Parents do not promote open communication with the child. They do not also explain the reason behind the rules and limits that they set. The parents are demanding but do not provide all the needs of the child. Children who are raised under the authoritarian parenting style may develop insecurities and possess an anti-social behavior.
• Indulgent parenting
In this case, the parents are responsive but not demanding. They do not expect much from the child and they usually provide all of the child’s needs and wishes. Kids raised by indulgent parents tend to grow as spoiled brats or spoiled sweet kids.
• Neglectful parenting
The parent is neither responsive nor demanding. They do not support their kids emotionally but will still provide their basic needs, just the basic needs.
You have to choose the best parenting style to raise your kids well and be good citizens in the future. Never neglect them, you must love and support them all the time.
